5 Things to Know This Week in West Bloomfield

The holiday season and charity benefits highlight the local news this week.

Five local stories to keep an eye on Dec. 9-15:

1. Hanukkah continues through Dec. 16. Hanukkah commemorates the victory of the Jews over Syrian-Greek invaders in 164 BCE (Before Common Era). Hanukkah (Hebrew for dedicate) refers to the rededication of second Jewish Temple in Jerusalem and is celebrated by lighting one additional candle in a candelabrum, called a menorah for eight days.

2. Enjoy Chanukah Wonderland at Orchard Mall Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Organizers will offer an all-new Chanukah Lights. Warm up with the festive tunes of the Kidz Klez Band of Michigan and their twenty-piece band and eat hot soups, latkes, donuts and cider. Enjoy an array of crafts for the kids and the lighting ceremony of a 12-ft. menorah.

3. If you're looking for holiday entertainment of a different theme, this week marks the second week of the annual Patch Deck the House Contest to find the most over-the-top holiday decorations in America—the best "decked" house in the country—the one home so spectacularly decorated that everyone in town jokes your holiday decorations could rival Rockefeller Center’s.

If this sounds like your house, upload a photo or video of your home to our contest page from Nov. 26 to Dec. 16.

4. Local salons and fashion boutiques will come together for the fourth-annual Passion for Fashion Charity Show at Shenandoah Country Club. Enjoy strolling hors d’oeuvres, dancing, live entertainment including an ultimate runway show of over 50 models, desserts, late snacks and special holiday surprises.

Advance discounted tickets are available exclusively at groupon.com/deals/4th-annual-passion-for-fashion.

    5. The West Bloomfield weather forecast calls for wet conditions during dry and sunny by midweek. The Monday morning forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of rain and snow showers, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The forecast on Tuesday through Friday calls for sunny skies with the high temperature topping out Thursday at 41 degrees, according to NWS.
