Falling Tree Causes Tragic Accident in White Lake

Witnesses tell police falling tree was unavoidable.

Kerry Benjamin Schultz, 23, of West Bloomfield died Sunday after a falling tree hit his SUV causing him to lose control of the vehicle and go off the road.

The accident occurred at Pontiac Lake Road near Margie in White Lake Saturday at 3 p.m.

White Lake Police Chief Edward Harris said Schultz was traveling westbound down Pontiac Lake Road when a tree fell across the roadway and struck the roof of the SUV Schultz was driving.

"He lost control of the vehicle and it went off the road into a ravine," Harris said.

Police and fire responded and had to extricate Schultz from the vehicle. He was transported to Doctors' Hospital in Pontiac and, according to Harris, died Sunday as a result of the injuries.

"It's such a tragic accident, I can't even imagine," Harris said. "Witnesses told us the tree was unavoidable, there was nothing anyone could do."

Harris said it's unclear why the tree fell when it did.

Police vehicle struck during investigation

While police were on the scene investigating the accident, a 59-year-old man from Waterford struck one of the police cars blocking off the road.

Harris said the man was arrested by police after it was discovered the man was intoxicated. A preliminary breath test administered at the scene showed the man had a blood alcohol level of .29. He was arrested and taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries. He was released from the hospital later that night and lodged in Oakland County Jail. There were no other injuries.

The man, David William Anderson, was arraigned Sunday and charged with operating while under the influence, second offense, and is currently being held on a $25,000 bond, according to Harris.

This is probably one of the most freak accidents I have heard of in a long time. I am so sorry for the man's family who had to lose someone this way. As for the drunk driver who hit the cop car, you hit a cop car, drunk, at like 4 in the afternoon. I hope he goes to jail for a bit to learn you can't and should not drink and drive. I am glad that the WLPD on scene for the accident was not hurt when he hit their car.

So incredibly sad...Kerry was such a great kid and so young. Praying for his family and all who are missing him at this time :/. There really are no words.
