Get Out: Polish Fair, Swimming, Memorial Day Parade
From the annual Polish Fair to a Memorial Day Parade, there's lots to do in and around West Bloomfield this weekend.
It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the extended weekend. West Bloomfield Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time. Check our picks for the activities to hit and events to attend in and around the area.
Where: Orchard Lake St Mary's Prep, 3535 Indian Trl., Orchard Lake Village
When: Friday 5-11 p.m., Saturday - Monday 11 a.m.-11 p.m.
Why go: The fair has been going on for 40 years, so perhaps you remember attending as a child and now you can take your own kids. It is one of the largest country fairs in Michigan, and in this area, it means summer is about to start. With over 50 carnival rides, delicious Polish fare including a variety of pierogi, stuffed cabbage, kielbasa and sauerkraut, Las Vegas-style gambling, and live music this fair is definitely fun for all ages. It's also a successful fundraiser for the high school!
Where: West Bloomfield High School
When: Saturday at 12 noon
Why go: I think we all may be getting the itch for summer time. As the temperatures rise thoughts of swimming may be on your mind. Here's the solution. The high school offers open swim this afternoon. Perfect for families or individuals to get a little exercise, have fun, and bring thoughts of summer a little bit closer.
3. Rummage Sale
When: Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m.
Why go: For treasure hunters the spring garage sale season may be a little slow due to all of the rain. Rain or shine the Church will be having a large rummage sale inside. With slightly used second hand goods, you never know what you might find. Remember the old adage, that one man's trash is another man's treasure.
Where: Kensington Metro Park, 2240 West Buno Rd., Milford
When: Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
Why go: No swimming, cycling, or running today — this fun-packed, family "triathlon" begins with a hayride, a hike, and then families can canoe down the Huron River together. Back at the farm enjoy quality time with a picnic lunch.
Where: Memorial Park, 3001 Orchard Lake Rd., Keego Harbor
When: Monday at 9:30 a.m.
Why go: The parade will honor 10 veterans who have served our country and live in our city and surrounding cities. They are also giving special recognition to some WWII veterans and a Navy SEAL. This year the parade is focusing on an educational aspect of teaching children what Memorial Day is really about. Many children including those who have parents fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan will be there, plus children from the scouts, and the children who decorate their bikes on Friday at Roosevelt Elementary School will participate. The West Bloomfield High School marching band, the West Bloomfield Fire Department, and the Honor Guard will all be parading. Come out and show your patriotism.
