Get Out: Walk4Friendship, Labor Day Roundup, and Fun at the Park
From a Friendship Circle fundraiser to Labor Day picnics and parades, there's something for everyone in and around West Bloomfield this holiday weekend.
It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the extended weekend. West Bloomfield Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time. Check our picks for the activities to hit and events to attend in the area.
1. Fun at Kensington
Where: Kensington Metro Park, Milford
When: Saturday at 11 a.m. or Monday at 11 a.m.
Why go: You stayed down in the mitten for the holiday, but are looking for a little escape from the normal activities. Check out Kensington Metro Park today. The park is offering horse-drawn carriage rides that will take you past the fields and through the woods. The park is also offering a "Beasts on the Beach" educational program which will teach you what is true and what is not true about snakes and turtles. Plus the Splash 'n' Blast is still available with its two 250-foot water slides, cannon spray guns, and a spray ground with serpents and palm trees.
2. Walk4Friendship 2011
Where: Friendship Circle
When: Sunday at 11:30 p.m.
Why go: It's the Friendship Circle's annual 5k walk and fundraiser. It begins with an inspirational ceremony and ends in a post-walk celebration that raises funds and community awareness for this nonprofit organization that helps individuals with special needs. During the celebration there will be a skateboard show and clinic, laser tag, bounce houses, and Aaron Fotheringham, a 19-year-old extreme wheelchair athlete. Also prepare to enjoy bourekas, corn on the cob, hot dogs, and watermelon.
3. Brotherhood Blood Drive
Where: Temple Israel
When: Monday at 9:30 a.m.
Why go: The American Red Cross is in urgent need of blood donors. The organization needs to meet blood orders for local hospitals and currently has low supplies. Today Temple Israel is giving you a local opportunity to give the gift of life, and since you probably have the day off it's a great time to give this most precious gift.
4. Village of Franklin Round Up
Where: Downtown Franklin
When: Monday at 10 a.m.
Why go: It's the 67th year for the "Round Up" in our quaint neighboring city. The family fair is a celebration of summers end. It features a classic car show, a parade at 12 p.m., activities including tattoos and pony rides for the kids, games, old-fashioned fair treats, and the "Art on the Village" fine art show. I think everyone in your family can find something to enjoy here.
5. Temple Israel's Annual Labor Day Picnic
Where: Temple Israel
When: Monday at 11:30 a.m.
Why go: Here is another fun family event to celebrate the Labor Day holiday. The picnic offers a little bit of everything with train rides, arts and crafts, pony rides, bounce houses, a DJ, soccer, games, magicians, and snacks and sweet treats.
