Look Back on 2011: Finn Goes Wire-to-Wire
The West Bloomfield High School junior cross country phenomenon finished first in every league meet this past season.
Patch came in to West Bloomfield in February of what will be remembered by many as a long, interesting year in the township. Between several interesting sports and games which turned into debate which turned into stories, videos, and photos, Patch was in a fairly unique position of providing the forum for these stories – and residents views on them – to be heard.
Today, we'll begin to look back on 2011 by remembering a key story:
Finn finishes first at every cross country league meet
With the way West Bloomfield High School junior Erin Finn's 2012 seasons went, cross country fans must be wondering what she could possibly in store for an encore.
From the Aug. 31 Mustang Invitational in Northville to the MHSAA Div. 1 State Final, Finn finished first in the 5,000-meter race 11 straight times, before finishing second in the Foot Locker National Finals in San Diego, short of first by just two seconds.
Among the highlights of the season were a first-place finish at the MHSAA Division 1 regional finals at Hess-Hathaway Park in Waterford Oct. 29, when the star runner finished with a course record time of 17 minutes, 59.2 seconds. Head coach Nate Belill said that is 14 seconds faster than last year's first place finish time, and gave her credit for not falling behind.
"It takes a lot of strength and focus to go out there and do as well as she did, when you’re out there by yourself without anyone pushing you," Belill said. "It goes to show she’s learned how to push herself, which is not easy to do."
What does this brand of dominance say about Finn, West Bloomfield High School, and the local community?
