Need to Know: Sample Ballots, New Precincts

Will you be a participant in the Michigan primary next Tuesday? Here is information on voting with an absentee ballot, a list of West Bloomfield's 25 precincts, and sample ballots for each.

The Aug. 7 primary election is now less than one week away, and that means one thing for West Bloomfield residents: prepare to participate in democracy.

Of course, many voters in West Bloomfield have already voted, or still plan to vote, through the absentee ballot process. Last week, Clerk Cathy Shaughnessy said that this year represents the largest number of absentee ballots issued since 2000.

"Voters have many contested races to choose from in this election,” said Shaughnessy, pointing to campaigning in several local races as increasing visibility and an informational campaign of printed material to help voters find their way through recent redistricting.

For those who'd like to vote absentee, there is still time to cast your ballot. For others, who plan to cast their votes on Tuesday, a list of precincts follows. Click on the precinct number to see a sample ballot for that precinct (PDF).

Voting absentee

According to the township Clerk, a separate absent voter ballot request must be submitted for each election unless the voter asks to be placed on the permanent absent voter ballot list. Those who qualify will be mailed an absentee voter ballot 75 days before the election.

If you're not a permanent absent voter, however, you can still submit an absent voter ballot. To obtain the ballot, call the clerk's office (1-248-451-4848) to have the ballot mailed to you or download and print the form for submission. When the form is completed, you can  mail, fax, or deliver it to the clerk's office — and you also can use the township's drop box at Town Hall to deliver it any time.

You can receive an absentee ballot if:

  • You are unable to vote without assistance.
  • You are 60 or older.
  • You expect to be absent from the city on Election Day.
  • You are in jail, awaiting arraignment or trial.
  • You have been assigned to work as a precinct worker in a precinct other than where you are registered.
  • You are unable to attend the polls because of religious beliefs.

If you are temporarily outside the United States, you can use a federal postcard application (FPCA) to apply for an absent voter ballot. The FPCA must be signed under oath unless you, your spouse or your parents are serving in the armed forces or merchant marine.

All ballots must be back to the clerk's office by 8 p.m. Election Day. If you're curious, track your absentee ballot with the Oakland County Absentee Ballot Tracker.

Really good explanation & detailed information. Thanks for keeping voters informed - liked your coverage of candidates, issues & forums, too.
One minor detail: the URL for the Absentee Ballot Tracker didn't work. A search for Oakland Co. Absentee Ballot Tracker led to:
www.oakgov.com/clerkrod/elections/ it will transfer to the state SOS website that allows you to put in your individual information, shows your precint, etc.

Thanks, Randa. I added a link to this address: https://webapps.sos.state.mi.us/mivote/

I've never voted absentee myself, but that should work.

Tim, you folks are doing a great job of informing the voters of the challenges we all face this year in the democratic process. Rebecca's piece clearing up the confusion about the elections to replace Mr. McCotter was great. And today's summary is spot on! I am an election worker and I plan to have print-outs of these articles available to help us explain what is going on.
Thank you for paying attention to the details!

The real challenge is getting of rid of the notoriouse, Oakland County District Judges (you know who you are), and replacing them with "family fair" judges in place and also stop putting those accused of "misdemeanors" in that rat-hole, known as the "Oakland County Jail"

Your kids, fathers and mothers are at risk of being sent to this "hell hole", sleeping on concrete foors, abused by guards and physclogical damage for minor offences; instead of getting the real help they need.

The high flying helicopter pilot SHERIFF, needs to resign IMO and we need judges that care. This is Oakland County, one of the wealthiest counties in the US and we have a jail no better than the ASPCA IMO. NO wonder they riot!

Time for a big change in our Police, Judges and Sheriff.
