Visions for Vacancies: What Should Happen to the Dunham's Building?

You don't need to be an urban planner to know what West Bloomfield needs from this vacancy. Talk about it on Patch.

As a new Dunham's Sports opened in the Gateway Plaza across the street over the past couple of years, the old Dunham's building on Northwestern Highway has remained vacant.

Patch wants to know: What's your vision for this building?

According to the township, the building, located on Orchard Lake Road near 14 Mile Road, has 3.6 acres available, recommended for a townhouse, live/work unit, retail sales, personal services, office, bank, hotel, restaurant, movie theatre, health club, indoor recreation, or banquet hall.

You don't need to be a commercial developer or urban planner — or have money to invest in a business project — to have the next great idea. We want to hear about it.

An Irish pub and a Mexican restaurant would be great. But how would the upcoming construction of two roundabouts at that intersection affect any business that goes there? And would traffic then drive right on through without patroniizing any business there.

I would like a theatre or a bowling alley. We have enough strip malls.

Raze the building, remove the asphalt, install berms around the perimeter, grass in the interior, install some benches, plant a few trees and shrubs.

Some living things in the middle of all the pavement would be a welcome entryway to the township -- put some of the "bloom" back into West BLOOMfield.

I think this is not a bad idea at all! Thanks for the comment.
