What's Happening This Weekend, West Bloomfield?

Walk for Israel, interviews for school superintendent and more are planned this weekend.

 

You've made it to Friday. Finally! Here's what is happening in town:

Detroit Native Violinist Returns Home

Where: Temple Israel, 5725 Walnut Lake Rd., West Bloomfield

When: 7:30-9:30 p.m. Sunday

Why go: Temple Israel’s Schmier Chapel Chamber Series presents violinist, Gabriel Bolkosky as he performs a diverse repertoire of classical and contemporary works. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Bolkosky began his violin studies at age three. With many albums released and the winner of the Darius Milhaud Prize,  Bolkosky now teaches violin and chamber music at the University of Michigan. He is the executive director of The Phoenix Ensemble, a nonprofit organization dedicated to being a musical resource for artists and educational institutions.

Superintendent Search Interviews to be Held

Where: West Bloomfield Schools Administrative and Community Services building, 5810 Commerce Rd., West Bloomfield

When: 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Saturday

Why go: The interviews are part of a monthslong search process the district has undertaken in order to find a new superintendent. In March, the board held a special board meeting in order to narrow down search criteria with firm Ray & Associates and established the incoming superintendent's annual salary at approximately $190,000. 

Carnival of the Animals Coming to West Bloomfield

Where: Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit6600 W. Maple Rd., West Bloomfield

When: 1-2 p.m. Sunday

Why go: This dance, set to the music of Camille Saint Sean, will fill the stage with props used to transform the space into a fantasy world of breathtaking and surprising images. "Carnival" is performed by DDC dancers and also features young dancers from Farmington High School Dance Company and children from the Metropolitan DanCentre, Novi. A pre-concert workshop for kids (ages 4-14) is offered and participants will share their accomplishments on stage before the show. 

Pro-Israel Rally Returns to West Bloomfield

Where: Temple Shir Shalom, 3999 Walnut Lake Rd., West Bloomfield

When: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday

Why go: West Bloomfield is scheduled to become a destination Sunday for flag-waving activists in support of Israel during the annual Walk for Israel event. Walk for Israel takes place to coincide with Israel's independence day, which was April 26 this year, and includes a Kosher lunch as well as a line of speakers and activities for children.

 A free Kosher lunch will occur at 12 noon followed by the 1 p.m. walk. Admission is free. Shuttle service and parking will be available. To learn more, visit walkforisrael.org.
