Who Has Donated to Presidential Campaigns and How Big Are the Checks?

Search the latest Michigan data made available by the Federal Election Commission for contributions to President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

The presidential campaigns of President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney are fueled with hundreds of millions of dollars donated by individuals in 2012. The watchdog Web site, opensecrets.org, estimates contributions nationally by individuals to Obama's campaign totaled $631 million. Romney's share of contributions by individuals was $384 million.

The analysis is based upon the latest Federal Election Commission records released in late October. Closer to home, opensecrets.org reports that Michigan ranked 16th with $13 million contributed by individuals to both candidates, $7.8 million to Romney and $5.2 million to Obama.

Curious which Michiganders gave to the major presidential campaigns? You can use the widget above to search the latest FEC records available for Michigan to see who donated money to which campaign, how often, and how much. You can do it by candidate, contributor, amount of the contribution, contributor's city or ZIP code.

It's important to note that while a vote for a candidate is secret, a donation to a campaign is public record and open to public scrutiny.

Federal election law requires campaigns to regularly report donations and contributors. The information in the database was downloaded from the Federal Election Commission’s website. The data is based on quarterly reports from the campaigns and is current through Aug. 31

And the top state for individual contributions? Californians gave $94.1 million to both candidates, $57.7 million to Obama and $36.4 million to Romney.ok

FYI - Romney's Jeep ad merely states they are planning to make Jeeps in China. Some are saying not true "since not at the expense of any US jobs". This makes no sense. What Romney is saying is true. The question is whether that Jeeps should be made here and exported to China vs made in China.

I've heard from many (including our President during the last debate) that Romney "would have liquidated the auto industry".

CNN Reality Check: Erin Burnett clarifies the "auto bailout" spin from the media.

Let's start with the allegedly Romney NY Times Op Ed entitled "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt". HE DIDN'T WRITE THAT. His title was something like "The Way Forward for the Auto Industry". The horribly pathetically biased NY Times wrote that title.

This is the first time I've heard this. Amazing.

Romney merely proposed an orderly bankruptcy. Guess what, that's what ended up happening after taxpayor funding. A bankruptcy.

Here's the CNN link:

Literally trillions have been spent by gov't and fed to stimulate the economy and this is where we are. See CNBC's "Are we rich or poor?" debate (worth watching) to understand my concerns:

JByrd, you have heard so many Romney lies overr the past several months, that you apparently can't distinguish between fact and fiction any longer. Romney lied in the Jeep ad, face the facts....

Chrysler's CEO and most media agree!

“Inaccurate” says Chrysler CEO:

NO THANK YOU!

I don’t want Romney’s version of change including:

• A severely conservative Supreme Court.

• Tax and jobs plan that doesn’t make mathematical sense as most experts say.

• 1% percent control of the nation.

• Leader who says “corporations are people”, and puts the needs of corporations before the people.

• Higher taxes for middle class and lower taxes for the rich.

• Medicare taken bankrupt in 2016, as reports indicate.

• Overturn of Roe vs Wade and return women’s rights to the 1950s.

• Leader who condemns 47 percent of Americans.

• Leader with hot and controlling temper who is eager to start war against Iran.

I’m very pleased to stay with reliable, proven Obama-Biden who are taking America FORWARD!

Forward? If the last 4 years are what you consider "forward" I want no part of it. It sounds like the last two posts have drunk the media koolaide where nothing Obama does that may damage him is reported. How about Obama's stimulus money (our tax $) going to one after another failed green energy plants, or the absolute disgrace of Libya (oh yeah you haven't heard about that fiasco because your media is ignoring it until after the election), his foreign policy disasters, the keystone pipeline, destruction of coal jobs because he wants to do it "smarter" I guess. Please! This man is an immature, incompetent disaster who should have never been elected in the first place.

Go to factcheck.org or politifact.com for the real information. Don't make your decisions based upon fanatic responses and tiny biased soundbytes.
Michigan Public Radio has openly and evenly aired lengthy reports of the issues raised about the USA response to our embassy attacks in Libya. All of the available information and government reports only raise more questions. Second guessing the decisions made and the ability of the people on the ground and remotely contribute nothing to the debate, especially when comments and information are taken out of context.
