The weekend-long comic convention starts Friday in Novi. Are you going?

Motor City Comic Con, Michigan’s original comic convention, celebrates its 24th anniversary Friday to Sunday at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. Attendees will be absorbed into comic culture when seeing and meeting comic icons, shopping for comic merchandise and checking out what's new in the artist alley. Convention-goers will see comic characters come to life from participants of the adult and children costume contests, as well as enthusiastic fans.  Are you going to Comic Con? Share your photos from the convention, in costume or not, on Patch.  Add your photos to our gallery by clicking the "Upload Photos and Videos" button above.

Help Stuff the Truck for Forgotten Harvest at Whole Foods in West Bloomfield

The Saturday event encourages shoppers to help collect food for those in need.

Forgotten Harvest is teaming up with Whole Foods Market in West Bloomfield for a Stuff the Truck event to help gather food for those in need. Volunteers will be present to collect donations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and all food collected from three Whole Foods locations will be distributed to Forgotten Harvest’s network of over 260 agencies in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. Whole Foods shoppers can pick up a Stuff the Truck shopping list on their way into stores, purchase any of the list’s items while shopping and donate to Forgotten Harvest on their way out. The local store is at 7350 Orchard Lake Rd.; other locations are in Troy, 2880 W. Maple Rd., and Rochester Hills, 2918 E. Walton Blvd.  Source: Press release

West Bloomfield Native Turns Love of Form, Color Into Glass Business

Kevin Carlin discovered the art in Hawaii and now owns Motor City Glass Works, a studio in Sylvan Lake.

West Bloomfield native Kevin Carlin discovered glass blowing while visiting Hawaii after he graduated from high school and built his love for the art into a business. "I've always been into form and color, and the ability to make a product by hand," said Carlin, who in 2010 founded Motor City Glass Works in Sylvan Lake.  The 35-year-old Brother Rice alum said he wasn't sure what he really wanted to do after high school, so he took some classes at Oakland Community College. A sculpture class got him interested in three-dimensional forms. His trip to Maui and exposure to glass blowing led him to take some courses at the University of Hawaii. "That's where I started doing ceramics and really kind of focused more on the vessel," he said.  …

West Bloomfield Hospital Joins National Initiative to Offer Healthful Food Options

An increased selection of fruits and vegetables and a daily wellness meal are part of the hospital's participation in Partnership for a Healthier America.

Over the next three years, Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital will provide even more healthful food options for its patient room service and cafeterias. For its participation in Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), Henry Ford Health System has pledged to do the following at all of its hospitals: “Making healthy foods easily available for our patients, employees and guests is part of our overall commitment of providing quality health care,” said Bethany Thayer, a registered dietitian and director of Henry Ford’s Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. “We’re proud to help set a national benchmark for serving healthy food options in our cafeterias.” Henry Ford is one of 16 health systems nationally, and the only one in …
