5 Things You Can Do to Be a Better Voter

How to get an absent voter ballot, where to learn more about the candidates and issues and more information about West Bloomfield area elections.

Voters in the West Bloomfield area will go to the polls two weeks from today to help determine the fate of two bond referendums.

In addition, Keego Harbor, Sylvan Lake and Orchard Lake residents will elect new council members.

Here are five things you can do before election day to be a more informed and involved voter:

1. Apply for an absent voter ballot.

If you can't get to your polling place, you can still exercise your right to vote. Absent ballot applications are available on the West Bloomfield Township, Orchard Lake, Keego Harbor and Sylvan Lake websites. If you want the ballot mailed, your application must be received by 2 p.m. the Saturday before the election.

2. Review a sample ballot.

These are also available on the West Bloomfield TownshipOrchard LakeKeego Harbor and Sylvan Lake websites.

3. Learn about the candidates.

Fortunately, voters have a plethora of information to help them get to know the people who want their votes:

4. Learn about the Farmington Public Schools or Walled Lake Consolidated School District bond referendums.

Both school districts have posted detailed information about their bond proposals:

5. Write a letter to the editor.

Tell your friends and neighbors who you support in the city council races or how you feel about the school bond referendums. Letters should be posted directly to our Speak Out Conversation board. Just click in the "What do you want to share?" box and start typing!
