Jewish Organizations Host An Evening with Mark Shriver

The West Bloomfield event features the son of Sargent Shriver, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2003.

Mark Shriver, son of Sargent Shriver, will speak Oct. 10 about his father and his book, A Good Man, in a 6:30 p.m. event at Knollwood Country Club in West Bloomfield.

The event is collaboratively sponsored by Jewish Senior Life, Alzheimer’s Association-Greater Michigan Chapter and JVS’s Dorothy & Peter Brown Jewish Community Adult Day Care Program.

Sargent Shriver was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2003; he died in 2011. Married to Eunice Kennedy, he was the force behind the creation of the Peace Corps; he also created such programs as the Job Corps, Head Start and others. He was a U.S. Ambassador to France and ran in the 1972 presidential election as the running mate to George McGovern.

“It is our honor to have such a prominent celebrity coming to metro Detroit, to speak about a topic that affects so many of us, losing that connection to a loved one due to Alzheimer’s and dementia-related disorders,” said Rochelle Upfal, CEO of Jewish Senior Life.

Carol Rosenberg, director of the JSL Foundation, said the event furthers the mission of the organizations, "to provide assistance to our older adults, so that they can age with dignity and continue to contribute to the community for as long as possible."

Mark Shriver served in the Maryland House of Delegates for two terms and is currently Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives for Save the Children.
