Sierra Club Organizes Anti-Coal Effort in West Bloomfield

A kick-off meeting will be held Sept. 17 at Marshbank Park Lodge.

The Sierra Club will kick off its Beyond Coal Campaign at the Marshbank Park Lodge, 2805 Hiller Road in West Bloomfield on Sept. 17, at 6:30 p.m.

According to a press release issued by organizer Lucy Sedgwick, Michigan’s DTE Energy is one of the most coal-dependent utilities in the country.

"Coal-fired power plants emit soot that leads to higher rates of cancer and asthma, and DTE’s reliance on outdated, dirty coal is making customers right here in West Bloomfield pay ever-increasing electric bills," she wrote.

The Sierra Club is asking DTE Energy to invest in renewable energy like wind and solar to transition away from coal, Sedgwick added. "West Bloomfield is in the heart of DTE’s biggest service area and home to key members of DTE’s Board, the ultimate decision makers on a transition plan. DTE needs to hear that residents in Oakland County, their customers and neighbors, want clean energy right here, right now."
