Auditions for 'Avenue Q'

The Broadway hit “Avenue Q” took the “Tony Award” triple crown of for best musical, score and book. The Farmington Players Barn will be the first community theatre in the Detroit area to perform the show, August 10-25.

Audiences will laugh out loud as a lively team of adults and puppets tell the story of a college grad named Princeton, searching for his purpose in life.

He moves to a shabby New York apartment on Avenue Q where he meets colorful characters including Kate (The Girl Next Door), Rod (The Republican), Trekkie (The Internet “Sexpert”), and Lucy the “slut.”

Those auditioning are encouraged to use their best Muppet/Sesame Street voice for all puppet characters. Please choose a song from the show to sing at auditions.  Cuts are available at www.farmingtonplayers.org.

The characters are as follows:

Princeton [Single-Rod Puppet] (M, 20’s-30’s, Tenor)

A bright-eyed college grad.

Kate Monster [Single-Rod Puppet] (F, 20’s-30’s, Mezzo) A naïve kindergarten teaching Assistant; a bit older than Princeton.

Rod [Double-Rod Puppet] (M, Adult, Tenor)

A republican investment banker with a secret.

Nicky [Live-Hands Puppet] (M, Adult, Tenor)

The good-hearted slacker who lives with Rod.

Trekkie Monster [Live-Hands Puppet] (M, Adult, Tenor)

A reclusive creature obsessed by the Internet.

Lucy the Slut [Double-Rod Puppet] (F, 20’s-30’s, Mezzo)

A vixenish vamp with a dangerous edge.

Bad Idea Bear/NewComer (Male) [Double-Rod Puppet]

(M, Tenor) A snuggly, sinister bear / A curious college grad.

Bad Idea Bear/Mrs. T (Female) [Double-Rod Puppet]

(F, Soprano) A snuggly, sinister bear / Kate’s ancient boss

Gary Coleman (F, 25+, African American, Alto)

Yes, that Gary Coleman! He is the building superintendent.

Christmas Eve (F, 25+, Asian, Mezzo)

Brian’s tough love, therapist/fiancée who moved here from Japan – Played with a thick, stereotype Asian accent.

Brian (M, 25+, Tenor)

The laid-back, out-of-work comedian.
