Congregation Beth Ahm, a Conservative synagogue based in West Bloomfield with a metro-wide membership and a lively adult Jewish education program that is open to the entire community, has announced a premier winter adult learning opportunity with Prof. Howard N. Lupovitch. An Israeli film series will explore the beginning of modern Israeli politics and the interplay between Jewish tradition and secular Israeli culture.

The series will take place at Beth Ahm on three consecutive Sunday evenings – Jan. 8, Jan. 15, and Jan 22 - at 5:30 p.m. At each session, Prof. Lupovitch will introduce the film and lead an interactive discussion following the movie. There is a charge of $15 per session, which includes the movie, light refreshments, and Prof. Lupovitch’s presentation. Each session will be self-contained and can be attended independently. Advance reservations are requested in order to plan seating and refreshments.

The series begins on Jan. 8 with the screening of “I Love You Rosa.”  This Oscar-nominated film is about a young widow, who according to the Jewish tradition of yibum(Levirate marriage), must marry her late husband’s 12-year-old brother when he becomes of age.

On Jan. 15, the film will be “Three Days and a Child.”  Old and new relationships are explored in this film based on the classic story by A.B. Yehoshua. A young man returns to his kibbutz after army service to find that the woman with whom he is in love has married another man. Then, one day, his former girlfriend asks him to look after her son for three days.
