Raydiance Gives Away Custom Wig in Contest for Breast Cancer Patients

The West Bloomfield company invites breast cancer patients to share their journeys, for a chance to win.

For more than 45 years, Raydiance Tru Fit hair duplication service of West Bloomfield has helped thousands of metro Detroit cancer patients feel better about their looks.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the company has launched the Raydiance-We’re Hair for You-Giveaway, which will provide one breast cancer patient with a tailor-made wig that will virtually duplicate her own hair, from texture to the color and style.

Company owner Lisa DesJardin said she grew up in the business, which was started by her parents in the family garage. She and her brother, Tony Williams, have been joined by a third generation dedicated to helping those who have suffered hair loss, whether from cancer or other medical conditions.

Working with women who are undergoing cancer treatment, DesJardin said, is the most meaningful part of her work.

"They're very dear to our hearts," she said. "They're told that they have this devastating news, and now they're told that second, they may lose their hair."

When a woman comes in to the office, staff members take note of the color and density of her hair and the way she wears it, and they take photos and samples.

"When we say exact duplication, that's really what we're doing," DesJardin said.

The process is timed with the client's schedule of cancer treatments, to ensure a natural transition.

"When all's said and done, they come in with their own hair, they walk out with their exact duplication and nobody knows the difference," DesJardin said.

Williams said the work is incredibly rewarding. "Not everyone can say this ... At the end of the day, every day, you know you've made a big difference in someone's life," he said.

The Raydiance family decided to launch the contest because "we really want to see this experience in everybody ... especially cancer patients," Williams said.

"We really wanted to give that back to the community and show them what a difference it makes," he said. "When you're looking good, you're feeling better."

Raydiance will accept entries by U.S. mail or email until midnight, Oct. 31. Entries should include name, contact information, a photo with current hair style and the contestant's breast cancer story. The winner will be selected by the staff of Raydiance and must be able to come to the shop for fittings.
