“Mental health is so important in this country and osteopathy integrates the body, mind and spirit and as president of ACONP, it provides the greatest opportunity for an osteopathic physician to impact mental health across the country,” said Dr. Piccinini. “You’re able to help set policy, interact with the executives of the American Osteopathic Association and help improve the state of mental health in Michigan and our nation.”

Dr. Piccinini completed his residency and Fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital and Medical College of Wisconsin, respectively. As the youngest member of the ACONP to have been bestowed the honor of Distinguished Fellow in 2007, he has served as the program chairman, which organizes the educational conferences. Dr. Piccinini currently serves on the Michigan Osteopathic Association’s Board of Trustees as secretary/treasurer.

In his speech to the ACONP members, Dr. Piccinini congratulated the people who came before him and said “although I have a clear focus and direction on where the college needs to go, it’s my predecessors who have helped the college achieve the success as the fastest-growing specialty within the AOA in regards to training programs.”

The American College of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists represents nearly 800 osteopathic physicians and students while promoting the art and science of osteopathic medicine, maintains and further evaluates the highest standards of proficiency and training, and stimulates original research and investigation among osteopathic neurologists and psychiatrists. What is a D.O.?

D.O.s and M.D.s are the only two groups of physicians fully licensed to prescribe medication and practice in all specialty areas, including surgery, in the United States. They both complete four years of medical school followed by graduate medical education through internship or residency programs typically lasting three to eight years. In addition, D.O.s receive extra training in the musculoskeletal system, providing them with an in-depth knowledge of the ways that illness or injury in one part of the body can affect another.
