Around the Mitten This Week: Autorama Time, 100-Mile Chase, Film Rally and More

MI man who is sought in crimes here led NY and NJ cops on a 100-mile chase, gearheads got revved up for Autorama, film industry proponents rally and a look at high school sports.

Got a sweet ride? Chances are you're in Detroit this weekend with the thousands who will be ogling the souped up Chevys and cool-cat Corvettes at Autorama.

Among those showing will be Macomb residents Dan and Peggy Kelly, who have a bright silver metallic 1964 Plymouth Sport Fury at this weekend's 59th Detroit Autorama being held at the Cobo Convention Center.

 a Livonia hall Thursday night to show their solidarity. Detroit Free Press columnist Mitch Albom, Oakland County Treasurer Andy Meisner and Michigan-based actor Jeff Daniels spoke. “This is not about saving Tom Cruise,” Albom said. “This is about saving Tom Farmington Hills and Tom Novi and Tom Detroit.”

NY Police Arrest Wanted MI Man After 100-Mile Chase

 after an "extraordinarily long" chase. New York State Police identified the man as 27-year-old Joseph T. Reiner, 27, of Fraser, Saturday night. The man is also a suspect in two home invasions in Grosse Pointe Farms on Thursday and Friday and the theft of a 1999 Acura, which Reiner was driving at the time of his arrest,  New York police said.

Ex-Soccer Coach Extradited To Face 2006 Molestation Charges

 as Birmingham Police took custody of a  man charged with molesting a minor in 2006. When officers tried to arrest him then, Claudio Caffelli fled to Peru and fought a four-year extradition battle. He faces a preliminary hearing on March 10. 

Cheer Teams Have Spirit (Yes They Do!)

Stoney Creek was one of four teams that advanced to the state finals next weekend. Rochester High School, a team that has been to 17 consecutive state finals, did not qualify for the state meet because of a penalty.

Snow Problem: Dearborn Responds to Residents' Plowing Complaints

While most residents of southeast Michigan are just complaining about the snow, , which they claim has been sub-par to years past. The Department of Public Works responded, saying large amounts of snow, cars in the streets and a loss of manpower is to blame.

Pill Thief Fended Off in Fenton

 and demanded pills at for the second time in about a month Tuesday, police said. After getting away with $850 in pills last month, he slipped away again, but this time he was empty handed.

Poker-playing tow-truck driver helps nab bank robbery suspect

 alerted 911 then followed a man he saw run from a bank. "The dye pack exploded and this red dye flew everywhere around him," the driver said. Police made an arrest two miles away and called the man a hero but he says: "I was just playing poker on my phone."

A Reminder to Clean Those Lint Traps

 started inside a wall, New Baltimore fire officials said. "We believe it was related to the laundry shoot being plugged up with lint," Fire Capt. Douglas Calvert said. "Lint is very flammable." So keep those lint traps, clean, folks.

EPA Removes PCBs from St. Clair Shores

-contaminated sediment from the 10 Mile storm drain in St. Clair Shores. The EPA is still trying to find the source for the contaminants, and has put it in some new weirs to help stop the sediment from reaching the lake.

Hur0n Valley District to Consolidate Middle Schools

After weeks of debate, the Huron Valley School District in White Lake scrapped a plan to move fifth grade to middle schools and has decided to transition from four to three middle schools. The district has yet to decide which middle school will be eliminated, and whether or not that school will be closed for good or repurposed.
