Cadillac Drives Through Salon Window

No one was injured in the crash at Evo Salon, on the corner of Green Lake Road and Commerce Road Wednesday morning.

Wednesday started off strangely for Evo Salon owner Brandon Phillips, and, he said, it became a lot stranger after a Cadillac Escalade crashed through the salon at about 9:50 a.m.

No one was injured in the crash, which occurred after the Escalade's driver collided with another vehicle on the corner of Green Lake Road and Commerce Road, Fire Chief Jay Wiseman said.

"I had an appointment scheduled 10 minutes after this happened at that very spot which she crashed through," said Phillips, who lives in West Bloomfield. "I was 10 minutes late that day, which means I was 10 minutes early. I'm usually 20 minutes early for every appointment. But I was just getting ready and I stopped dead in my tracks and the car rolled right past me."

Esther Johnson, 71, of Pontiac, said that she was on her way to help take care of an older man who lives in Novi when she "hit a slick spot" and lost control of the sport utility vehicle while making a left-hand turn on to Green Lake. Johnson added that after striking a vehicle at the intersection, she tried to swerve and lost control, rolling through the salon parking lot about 30 feet before crashing through the salon's large window.

"I was just working when all of the sudden we noticed the car coming towards us. In your mind, you think, it's going to stop eventually, but this just kept going. It was really scary," said Landy Tate, a stylist at Evo, which has been open about 11 months at that location.

Both cars were towed away, Wiseman said, and Johnson received a ticket for being at fault. Drugs and alcohol are not a suspected cause of the accident.

Evo will be closed as the West Bloomfield technical rescue team and building department work to stabilize the structure, which suffered significant damage in the accident. A vacant space is directly next-door, while other nearby businesses will remain open.
