Census: Household, Family Sizes Shrink in West Bloomfield

Newly released census data from the 2010 U.S. Census give a more detailed picture of West Bloomfield 's demographics.

More 2010 U.S. Census data was released last week, providing more details about the area's housing, age and sex characteristics. For West Bloomfield, the data show that the average household shrank from 2.74 to 2.66 people, and the average family size decreased from 3.17 people to 3.14.

These trends are mirrored in state data for household and family size.

Household characteristics also show a change. The number of households with families has decreased from 77.7 percent in 2000 to 74.8 percent 2010, while nonfamily households have increased from 22.3 percent in 2000 to 25.2 percent in 2010. Households of people living alone have increased from 19.4 percent in 2000 to 22.2 percent in 2010.

The 2010 U.S. Census population numbers released in (dropping to 64,690 in 2010 from 64,860 in 2000). But the decline in population wasn't unique to West Bloomfield. All adjacent communities decreased, and Michigan was the only state in the union to lose population, declining 0.5 percent.

The new data also show that West Bloomfield's median age has increased from 35.3 years old to 43.6 years old. When breaking down West Bloomfield's demographics, it shows an increase in the 65-and-older group from 2000, increasing from 8,674 in 2000 to 11,275 in 2010.

The median age of the entire state also increased, from 35.5 years old in 2000 to 38.9 in 2010.
