Duck Before You Dip: Pampered Chef Ice-Cream Scoop Recalled

One version of the popular ice cream scooper can literally "fly off the handle" and cause injury.

The Pampered Chef ice-cream dipper, with its liquid-filled, dome-shaped cap, can literally “fly off the handle,” causing injury to people nearby.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in conjunction with Pampered Chef, announced a voluntary recall today of the highly popular item, and is asking consumers to immediately stop using it. The version in question was sold by Pampered Chef consultants at parties and online between July and September 2010. There were 20,000 of the scoops sold.

The Addison, IL-based company reports that when the liquid-filled scoop is exposed to warm water the cap and seal at the end of the scoop handle can fly off with “substantial force, posing an impact injury hazard.”

The dippers are gray aluminum with a plastic dome-shaped cap on the base of the handle, and “Pampered Chef” is imprinted on the cap. The dippers are about 7 inches in length. The nontoxic liquid is sealed inside the handle, conducting the heat of the user’s hand to more easily scoop hard ice cream.
