Funeral Thursday for Teen Bryson Salem

18-year-old Walled Lake Central graduate had no pre-existing medical conditions when he collapsed playing basketball Tuesday, according to Oakland County officials.

An autopsy is pending for a local teenager who collapsed playing basketball and died Tuesday night at .

Walled Lake Central High School graduate Bryson Salem, 18, was playing basketball at LifeTime Fitness in Commerce Township shortly after 5 p.m. when he collapsed, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:17 p.m., according to the Oakland County Medical Examiner's office.

Visitation took place Wednesday at the Southfield Funeral Home, with a funeral mass scheduled for 10 a.m. at .

The Medical Examiner's office noted that Salem had no pre-existing medical conditions which could have predicated his death. The Detroit Free Press reports that Salem was a pre-dentistry student at the University of Detroit Mercy, according to his father.

Walled Lake Consolidated Schools spokesperson Judy Evola said that the district provided counselors for students in grief.

Burial will be in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, according to the funeral home.
