Mom's Talk: How Do You Teach Children About Water Safety?

Taking precautionary measures aren't always enough to ensure the fun of summer doesn't turn tragic.

A year ago Monday, Paul Bhatti and Bloomfield Township Police Officer Eric Pernie helped save a 2-year-old girl that slipped into a family's pool undetected and became unresponsive.

"There was no splash, no thrash, nothing like that. It happened that quickly," said Stacy Fox, the girl's mother. The Fox's have proper safety precautions and are trained in CPR, but they still nearly lost their youngest daughter to tragedy.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Home Safety Council reported 48 drowning and 75 near-drowning incidents in 35 states from Memorial Day to June 28, most involving children.
