Mother's Day Gift Ideas, Day 1: The Written Word

In the week leading up to Mother's Day, West Bloomfield Patch will give five days of gift ideas.

With Mother’s Day right around the corner, area stores are prepping for the celebration by bringing out gifts aimed at capturing a mother’s heart.

has stocked its store with a variety of displays for Mother’s Day. Featured books range from stories to mothers or about mothers, cookbooks, romance novels, self-help books and other delightful reads. Many women circling the store last week noted that they would like to receive books for Mother’s Day, and many of them said they had received books in the past.

“I actually never have received a book for Mother’s Day — I usually get flowers — but I think it would make a good present,” said Rita Dallavecchia of Bloomfield Township.

Dallavecchia typically enjoys fiction but lately has found herself browsing the biographies. Bloomfield Hills resident Cindy Longhway said she enjoys receiving books, especially fiction, for any occasion. However, Longhway did note that she doesn’t like romance novels, although she said that would make a good gift for her own mother.

Some of Longhway’s favorites that she thinks other mothers could relate to are Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, The Help by Katheryn Stockett and novels by Jodi Picoult and Anne Tyler.

Commerce resident Alisa Seyburn, who has four children ranging in age from 4-16, said that although she mostly finds herself in the youth section of the bookstore, she appreciates receiving self-help books and Christian materials.

“I’m not much of a fiction reader; I usually go toward the self-help section,” Seyburn said. “Anything about bettering yourself as a parent or person is great.”

She did note that she would really like a gift card to seek out a new wardrobe for the holiday, but a couple of books would be a nice addition.
