Photo Gallery: Union Lake Hosts Fireworks Spectacular

Area families crowded the shore and boated out to take part in the many-years-old tradition of watching fireworks on Union Lake.

Hesham Odat is a new, proud, boat owner. Odat and his wife, Alaa Megdady, have been to see fireworks every Independence Day weekend on Union Lake, and being able to use his new vehicle Sunday night was very exciting for the Commerce resident.

"We're going to circle around a barge out in the middle of the lake to be able to watch the fireworks up close," said Odat as he watched Megdady prepare their children, Yara Odat, 3, and Talya Odat, 15 months, for the boat ride from the dock. "We love to use the boat and we go twice a week, and we're taking the kids for their first show here, so it's very exciting."

While the Odat family was one of many on the water, around 100 packed the shore near the corner of Union Lake Road and Cooley Lake Road in Commerce for family time. Sharon Mackenzie of Commerce reminisced on 25-plus years of watching the fireworks at the same area near her house.

"It's always a good show and it's close to home," said Mackenzie. "You can see fireworks from this spot which are being shot all over the place — Orchard Lake, Cass Lake ... it's a lot of fun."
