Oakland County high school students can win a $1,000 scholarship and tickets to the 124th Annual Lincoln Day Dinner, by entering the first Oakland County Republican Party “High School Lincoln Club Essay Competition.”

Featuring keynote speaker Donald Trump, the dinner will be held Tuesday, May 21 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi.

Interested students may submit essays of 1,000 or fewer words about political leadership, inspired by the theme: “Abraham Lincoln chose to do what was right, rather than what was expedient.”

Writers may use a variety of sources, including newspaper articles, books and websites. Essays will be judged on writing quality, persuasiveness, historical accuracy and an understanding of the political courage of Abraham Lincoln.

“The Lincoln Day Dinner is an incredible opportunity for Republicans to come together, celebrate our shared values and be inspired,” said event chair David Trott.

“The essay contest is an extension of this — our goal is to inspire and empower the next generation of Republican leaders by facilitating critical thinking about political issues, contributing to their education and inviting them to take part in one of Oakland County’s oldest and most cherished traditions," he added.

All essayists must be enrolled in public or private school, or home schooled, and must be residents of Oakland County. Essays must be submitted via email attachment to David Trott at dave@trottcenter.org by Friday, April 5 at 5 p.m.
