This Week in West Bloomfield: 5 Things to Know

This week, Patch will be covering public hearings by the West Bloomfield Township Planning Commission and the Parks and Recreation Commission.

Five local stories to keep an eye on Oct. 21-27:

1. A public hearing will be held by the West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation Commission to receive comments on a draft Parks and Recreation Five-Year Master Plan (2013-17) on Thursday. The draft plan reflects the Commission’s priorities for the next five years and, once adopted, will serve as a guide for the Parks and Recreation Commission and staff.

The draft Master Plan is available for review on the Commission website at westbloomfieldparks.org, and at the Recreation Activities Center, 4640 Walnut Lake Road, during regular business hours.

2. The West Bloomfield Township Planning Commission will hold a public hearing to consider a site plan, special land use permit and associated stormwater management plan for developers at the property of the former Farmington Eagle Elementary School, at Middlebelt and 14 Mile Roads on Tuesday.

The Islamic Cultural Association seeks approval to construct a 13,102 square-foot addition consisting of a mosque, lobby and multi-purpose room to the existing 38,860 square-foot building, creating a 51,962 square-foot place of worship.

3. The weather forecast calls for showers and clouds dissipating by midweek before possibly returning on Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The forecast calls for a chance of thunderstorms on Tuesday with a high of 73 degrees on Wednesday. There is a 70 percent chance of showers on Monday night, according to NWS.

4. Sportswriter Dan Ewald will speak on his friendship with legendary Detroit Tigers manager Sparky Anderson at the West Bloomfield Township Main Library Tuesday. Ewald was the Tigers’ public relations director for 18 years and Sparky’s career manager for 32 years. Dan will talk about Sparky’s spirit and the lessons he shared about baseball and life.

5. Sylvan Lake Parks and Recreation will host a Halloween party on Friday at the Sylvan Lake Community Center. Bring a carved pumpkin for judging as well as a simple dish to pass.
