West Nile Death Toll Rises and More News Near You

There was plenty of news around the Greater West Bloomfield area this week.

1. Bow and arrow enthusiasts in Farmington Hills will be able to continue backyard target practice after residents reported seeing deer injured by arrows in south Farmington Hills neighborhoods in November 2011, reported Monday. A city ordinance amendment introduced allows the use of bows in a safe manner, shooting only at artificial targets, and in a manner that prevents arrows from landing on someone else's property. 

2. A 75-year-old Plymouth woman who was reported missing Sunday was found in Clinton Township early Monday morning, wrote . Lois Lowney's family told Livonia Police she suffers from Alzheimer's disease.

3. On Friday,  reported the death toll in Michigan from West Nile Virus increased to five, and the number of cases reported statewide was 87. All of the deaths in Michigan have been among people ages 69 to 87. The medical director of the Livingston County Department of Public Health, Donald Lawrenchuk, suggests prevention -- avoiding the outdoors at dawn and dusk, using Deet insect repellent, dressing in long sleeves and pants, and draining any standing water outdoors.

4. On Tuesday,  reported that AAA officials predicted Tropical Storm Isaac -- soon expected to become Hurricane Isaac -- would increase gas prices in Michigan by 25 cents per gallon next week. Gas prices had increased to $4.04 per gallon in Fenton on Friday morning, Mapquest said.

5. Garage Grill & Fuel Bar, a new restaurant named for its historic use as a gas station, will be opening its doors in downtown Northville as soon as October, reported Tuesday. Items like pizza, steaks, seafood, burgers and salads will be served.
