Second Annual "Great Steps for NF, Walk for Neurofibromatosis"

Come and Take Great Steps Towards a Cure!

Most people have never heard of neurofibromatosis (NF) even though it is a condition that affects approximately 1 in 2,500 people. It is a genetic disorder of the nervous system that causes tumors to form on the nerves anywhere in the body at any time. It can cause cancer,
hearing loss, learning disabilities, epilepsy, bone deformities, vision impairment and chronic pain. About half of the NF cases are inherited by an affected parent, but the other half are spontaneous occurrences. Anyone can be born with NF.

The Saikalis Family of West Bloomfield is hosting their second annual “Great Steps for NF, Walk for Neurofibromatosis” event at the West Bloomfield High School track on Saturday, June 23 to raise awareness of neurofibromatosis and to raise money for research.
Suzanne and her kids, Sara and Alexander, decided to organize and host the walk soon after Suzanne's niece was diagnosed with NF about 2 years ago. Clara was only 1 ½ years old at the time. Last year's walk raised over $8,000 with more than 150 people participating. This year their friend Allyson Lejzorowicz, who has NF, has joined them to
help with the event.
