West Bloomfield Students Shatter Canned Food Drive Goal

Students at Abbott Middle School collect nearly 4,000 items for Gleaners Food Bank.

Students in Jo-Anne Scheloske’s 8th Grade Leadership class at Abbott Middle School in West Bloomfield School District have nearly doubled the goal they set for a canned food drive that benefits Gleaners Food Bank.

In just six days, students collected 3,944 canned food items, shattering their 2,000-can goal.

Gleaners collects and distributes over 45 million pounds of food annually, providing more than 33 million meals to neighbors in need. The food is brought to a Gleaners Distribution Center to be inspected and sorted, with the support of more than 30,000 volunteers each year.

Gleaners distributes the food to more than 500 partner agencies throughout southeast Michigan, including food pantries, schools, shelters, senior citizen centers and soup kitchens.
