Together, our experience with the 44th District Court and specifically probation programs exceeds 70 years. Today’s times require an innovative and outcome driven approach to dealing with offenders much like they did when Judge Leenhouts transformed not only the Royal Oak District Court’s approach to probation but truly the entire court system across the country. Judge Leenhouts who was elected at the age of 34, recognized the failure of the probation program as it was and implemented a new approach that caught the attention of the nation including three United States Presidents. While at the Boys & Girls Club as Executive Director, Boys & Girls Clubs of America honored our partnership with the 44th District Court with a National Honor Award for Program Excellence because of its effectiveness in addressing the rehabilatative needs of young probationers.
While much of the focus in this election has been on important factors such as experience, knowledge of the law and temperament, we believe it is equally important to vote for the candidate who is best equipped to bring new thinking and approaches to the emerging challenges today’s courts are facing. We firmly believe that Derek Meinecke is the best candidate to meet the needs of the community and the court. Derek’s record of aggressively addressing issues like domestic violence and elder abuse provide us with an insight as to how he will engage the community in addressing similar issues our court will face in the future. The 44th District Court has many tools at its disposal in keeping our community safe. It is important that the next Royal Oak District Court Judge has a broad range of skills and experience especially at the District Court level. Royal Oak is fortunate to have someone uniquely qualified running for District Court Judge in Derek Meinecke.
This is a critical time in our community and we believe that there is one clear choice for voters to make on Tuesday, Nov. 6. We urge you to join us in voting for Derek Meinecke.
The Honorable Keith J. Leenhouts, Royal Oak District Court Judge (Retired)
Jack Salter, Royal Oak Probation Officer (Retired)and Executive Director, Boys & Girls Club (Retired)
