Convicted West Bloomfield Grandmother Faces Wrongful Death Lawsuit

Sandra Layne and her husband, Fred, are named in a wrongful death lawsuit filed in Oakland County Circuit Court.

Sandra Layne, the West Bloomfield Township grandmother convicted of murdering her 17-year-old grandson Jonathan Hoffman, now faces a wrongful death lawsuit filed in Oakland County Circuit Court by a representative of Hoffman's estate.

According to a story in The Oakland Press, Douglas Wartell is seeking in excess of $1 million for each of these counts: "Sandra Layne is accused of assault and battery and wrongful death, false imprisonment and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Fred Layne (Sandra's husband) is accused of negligence/wrongful death."

While Layne admitted to authorities that she shot Hoffman in May of 2012, she testified at trial that she was afraid of the teen and shot him in self-defense. Prosecutors argued that Layne intended to kill Hoffman and shot him six times.
