West Bloomfield Teen's Shooting Death Shocks Community, Classmates

As the community comes to grips with the , the 17-year-old's grandmother remains in custody by West Bloomfield Police in connection with the teen's homicide Friday night.

Police would not say Sunday night if charges have been filed, or if they would be filed, against the unnamed 74-year-old woman. Her attorney spoke out over the weekend, saying she acted in self-defense.

The Oakland County Medical Examiners Office confirmed Saturday that Hoffman, the son of a prominent divorce attorney, was killed by multiple gunshot wounds. The shooting was reported to police around 5:27 p.m. West Bloomfield Police Lt. Tim Diamond said the boy was pronounced dead after being taken to  in Farmington Hills shortly after 6 p.m.

Funeral arrangements have been made at Ira Kaufman Chapel of Southfield.  Rabbi Joshua Bennett will officiate Tuesday at 11 a.m. Internment will follow at Machpelah Cemetery of Ferndale.

principal Joseph Greene wrote in an email Sunday night that Hoffman, a former student at the school, would be remembered with a moment of silence Thursday night during a ceremony "at the rock."

"As we process these events, it is my hope that we, as a school community, can decide what positive way we can heal and go forward in the wake of our recent losses and tragedies," Greene wrote.

Greene also wrote that social workers, in addition to the school's staff of social workers and counselors, will be available. Debriefing meetings are also scheduled to occur after school for students and staff on either Monday or Tuesday, Greene wrote.

Parents from  in Farmington Hills said Hoffman was a former graduate of that school. Diane Bauman, a spokeswoman for Farmington Schools, said Hoffman was a senior at Farmington Central High School and had moved into that alternative education program from North during the third trimester of the last school year.

Diamond said Friday he had "no idea" of the motive for the shooting, but that police had reported being called to a domestic disturbance at the address on the in March. The conflict was described as a "typical parent/child verbal" confrontation.

Understanding of the motive also evaded Hoffman's father, Michael Hoffman, of Scottsdale, AZ, co-founder of the Southfield-based law firm ADAM, the American Divorce Association for Men. Hoffman told the Detroit Free Press that there was nothing his son could have done to deserve such violence.

Diamond continued that he was unsure of the living arrangement, but believed Hoffman could have been living with his grandparents. The woman in custody is married and her husband has been notified, Diamond said. Diamond would not comment on past criminal history of Hoffman, nor his grandmother.
