High Speed Chase Ends at Champps in West Bloomfield

Chase speeds reached up to 100 miles per hour, and only the driver was injured.

A 31-year-old Beverly Hills man faces charges after a high speed chase early Thursday morning that ended when his vehicle crashed into the side of Champps Americana restaurant at 14 Mile and Orchard Lake Road in West Bloomfield.

According to West Bloomfield Township Police Lieutenant Tim Diamond, Southfield Police pursued the driver north on Northwestern Highway after a traffic stop.

"He was coming up Northwestern Highway and approaching Orchard Lake Road at about 100 miles an hour," Diamond said.

The vehicle hit a median and went airborne across Orchard Lake Road, took out a tree and eventually ran into the east side of the Champps building. Diamond said a wheel of the vehicle broke through one of the restaurant's windows. The crash also damaged the building façade and landscaping.

The accident occurred at around 2:53 a.m., and the restaurant was empty, Diamond said. The driver, who was alone in the vehicle, suffered "non-life threatening injuries" and was taken to Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills, he added.
