Fire Damages Kitchen; No One Hurt

An unattended pot on the stove led to a blaze Monday at a West Bloomfield home in which no smoke detectors were working.

officials urged residents to install and maintain smoke detectors after a kitchen fire Monday afternoon.

Fire Chief Jay Wiseman issued a statement Tuesday explaining that the resident at 5405 Raintree Ct. only became aware of the fire, which was the result of an unattended pot on the stove, when he heard a noise from the kitchen. Fire crews from three stations reported at 12:44 p.m. to an active fire and a house quickly filling with smoke, Wiseman said.

No injuries were reported. The resident was able to escape and fire crews kept the fire to the kitchen before extinguishing it.

There were no working smoke detectors in the home, Wiseman said.

"(Smoke detectors) are proven life savers," Wiseman said in the statement. "Smoke detectors should be installed throughout your home, at least one in every bedroom and one on every floor. Remember to test them and change the batteries at least two times per year."
