Man Hits Drunken Driving Display Car in West Bloomfield

A vehicle displayed at West Bloomfield High as a reminder about the consequences of drunken driving was struck in a single car accident early Sunday morning.

West Bloomfield Township Police Lieutenant Tim Diamond said the driver, a 37-year-old Harrison man, was traveling south on Orchard Lake Road at around 5 a.m., when his vehicle crossed traffic lanes, hit a sign, a utility pole and the wrecked car.

After the vehicle landed in the high school parking lot, Diamond said, the driver and passenger, a 27-year-old Farwell woman, ran away. She was taken into custody within an hour, but the driver eluded police for several hours before he was captured at around 1 p.m.

Both were taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries.

"He was a parole absconder, so we will turn him over to the Department of Corrections today," Diamond said Monday morning.
