Suspect in Office Building Thefts in Custody

Here are highlights of incidents reported to West Bloomfield Police from April 5-Tuesday.

A man is in custody on suspicion of stealing a large piece of granite from an office building in addition to other thefts at 7125 Orchard Lake Rd., according to

Police Lt. Curt Lawson said the granite was reported missing Thursday, in addition to other thefts recently, including a large flat-screen television Detectives initially suspected the weekend cleaning crew. However, upon investigation, Lawson said that according to the police report, a new suite owner had been acting suspiciously.

A search warrant was conducted of the new suite owner's suite, and several items, including the piece of granite, were recovered from it. The new suite owner was placed in custody, and investigators are still conducting the search to determine what had been taken, according to Lawson. He said several charges were pending and that an arraignment would soon follow.

Vandals strike home of vacationing residents

Last week, police responded to a call of vandalism at a home on the 7000 block of Locklin. Lawson said that while the male homeowner was on vacation in Florida, his neighbors reported that they had seen the letters "KKK" spray-painted on his garage door. Lawson said there were no signs of damage or forced entry. There are no witnesses or suspects.

Identity theft suspected

Last week, a resident received a call from a collection agency claiming that more than $900 had been charged to her name by Detroit Edison. Upon investigating, the resident found that the name on the bill was spelled differently from hers, and she called police.

Lawson said that resident had been paying for the electricity of a Detroit home, where detectives are planning to investigate.
