Teens Recovering, Motorist Could Face Charges in Sylvan Lake Crash

Authorities await results from blood tests to determine if they'll seek a warrant stemming from last week's crash in Sylvan Lake.

The injured teens involved in a head-on collision after a motorist crossed the center line of Orchard lake Road in Sylvan Lake last week are out of the hospital and recovering, police said. Meanwhile, the investigation into the crash remains open and could result in criminal charges for operating while under the influence.

The 24-year-old Bloomfield Hills man was arrested at the scene of the Feb. 24 crash. Paramedics took him to McLaren Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and submitted a blood sample for testing of alcohol and drugs, said Officer Eric Zuehlk of the Sylvan Lake Police Department. The crash remains under investigation, but will not move forward until those test results are complete and the case reviewed by prosecutors.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Department assisted with the initial crash investigation and reported that two 16-year-olds who suffered serious injuries were both backseat passengers in the westbound 2003 Pontiac Sunfire that was struck shortly after 3 a.m. The 18-year-old driver from Troy and a front-seat passenger of the Sunfire, also 16, were also treated for injuries and released.
