West Bloomfield Police Investigate Vehicle Thefts

In two cases, owners left their cars unlocked with the keys inside, Lt. Tim Diamond said.

West Bloomfield Township police responded to three auto theft reports over the past two weeks, and two of the vehicles have already been recovered.

According to Lt. Tim Diamond, the owner of a 2008 Dodge Sprinter van contacted police Aug. 20, after he recovered it in Detroit. The vehicle, which contained a variety of video games, was taken from the 7000 block of Gateway by an employee of the man's company, who had permission to take it.

The employee drove the van into Detroit and left it there, Diamond said. Some of the video equipment was stolen, but because the driver had permission to take the vehicle in West Bloomfield, no crime was committed locally.

Two vehicles were stolen from homes on Hillside sometime between Aug. 27 and Aug. 28. In both cases, Diamond said, the vehicles were left unlocked. A 2009 Toyota Prius was parked in the home's driveway, with the keys left in a front cup holder. Michigan State Police found that vehicle in Detroit.

A silver 2010 Honda Accord is still missing, after it was parked in the driveway with the keys in the ignition, Diamond said.
