West Bloomfield Police Warn About Phone Scam

A caller claiming to be from the Oakland County Sheriff's Department tried to get personal information from a West Bloomfield resident.

A resident in the 7000 block of Essex Drive in West Bloomfield is the latest person to receive a phone call that police say is a scam.

Lieutenant Tim Diamond said the caller told the resident he was from the Oakland County Sheriff's Department, but some have claimed to be from the West Bloomfield Township Police Department.

"He told the person he had forgotten to file a form for his taxes," Diamond said, adding the callers may threaten people with action from federal authorities. "They're just trying to trick people into giving them identifying information."

Diamond said no one should ever give out identification like a social security number over the phone.
