Detroit News: If Weingarden Can't Handle the Job, She Should Step Down

A newspaper editorial cites a number of missteps in Weingarden's office, including millions of dollars in receipts that were not properly recorded.

Citing a litany of recent problems inside the West Bloomfield Township treasurer's office, a Nov. 5 Detroit News editorial calls on treasurer Teri Weingarden to resign if she "can’t handle the duties and pressures of the office she sought".

Weingarden drew metro-wide media attention after she closed her office in the middle of the day Oct. 9, leaving behind a hand-written sign that cited "political issues". During their last meeting in October, trustees voted to expand an investigation by attorneys at Johnson & Rosatti to include "irregularities" in Weingarden's office.

Trustees launched the investigation in July, after discovering that paperwork authorizing the treasurer and deputy treasurer to conduct banking transactions may not have been filed.

The Detroit News editorial noted a number of missteps, including millions of dollars in receipts that weren't properly recorded, violation of a township investment policy and an error involving a $6 million transfer from one department to another.

The editorial notes: "If the problems appear severe enough, (attorney Chris Johnson) said the board could petition the governor to remove Weingarden. Other than that, it would be up to the citizens to start a recall campaign."
