McCready Hosts Town Hall on Autism at West Bloomfield Library

State Rep. Mike McCready, R-Bloomfield Hills, and colleague Klint Kesto, R-Commerce Township, will discuss Michigan's new autism benefit law.

Michigan's medical insurance laws changed in 2012 to mandate coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders. But not many residents know about it.

New State Rep. Mike McCready, R-Bloomfield Hills, hopes to change that and will make the recent autism insurance reform legislation the focus of a town hall meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, April 22 at the West Bloomfield Township Public Library. He and fellow freshman legislator Klint Kesto, R-Commerce Twp., will offer presentations on the signs and symptoms of autism, as well as treatment options under the new law.

As of October 15, 2012, both for-and-non profit insurance companies regulated by the state of Michigan are required to provide an autism benefit to members for services related to the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders up to age 18.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 50,000 Michigan residents live with autism, according to the Michigan Department of Community Health.

"Autism is so prevalent in our state, making it important to raise awareness about the disorder and its treatment options," McCready said. "This event will have experts on this issue who can answer questions and teach us about autism and how to help."
