Gerald J. Sukenic

Professional background

I began my first college career as an accountant. I worked towards trying to get my CPA certificate but then an opportunity to go into the building business with my family came along. I did that — I did the real estate and the building and did many other things. I was a volunteer fireman, a schoolteacher, an emergency medical technician, president of my homeowners association, president of a fitness club at the .

My children are in Arizona. My son is Deputy Director of the criminal division in the U.S. Attorney's Office in Phoenix and my daughter is a social worker. I have two lovely granddaughters, one just graduated college and is on her way to college.

Activities or key endorsements you'd like to mention?

I've been on the Parks and Recreation Commission since 2000. When I was there, I was co-author of a ballot proposal for safety paths in 2004. For that, I was given an award by the county and different government agencies at the Michigan Week breakfast.

Why are you running for Trustee?

I've always been heavily committed to development. My father helped create one of the subdivisions here, Deerfield Village. We need to become a city because then, we could go after federal funds. We need to get that money so we can go to Maple Road and build that road the way that Farmington Hills has built 12 Mile Road. If elected, that's one of my goals. We really need to get rid of the congestion of traffic on Maple Road.

Drake Road has a flooding problem. That flooding on the path has been there, at least, 8-9 years. If you're running there, you can't use it. It's underwater. I've been very active with the township and the county in getting something done there.
