Mosque Developers' Variance Requests Coming to Public Hearing

Islamic Cultural Center development at former site of Eagle Elementary School goes before township Zoning Board of Appeals Oct. 2.

Plans to build the Islamic Cultural Center, a mosque/community center at the site of the former Eagle Elementary School in West Bloomfield, will next come before township government for a public hearing Oct. 2.

Township Planner Sara Roediger said Monday that homeowners near the school at 14 Mile and Middlebelt roads have been notified of the meeting of the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) to grant a number of variances to the site plan, after the Planning Commission tabled the plan at its Aug. 15 meeting.

Township attorneys had requested the ZBA to interpret the township zoning ordinance with regard to several issues raised at the Aug. 15 meeting — including the height of the minaret and dome atop the mosque portion of the building, the size of the setback from the street, and the fencing separating the property from neighbors.

On Friday, the Michigan Court of Appeals affirmed a trial court's ruling that dismissed a lawsuit seeking to overturn Farmington Public Schools' sale of Eagle Elementary School to the Islamic Cultural Association (ICA).

The public hearing begins at 5:30 p.m. in West Bloomfield Town Hall.

Once again, please be factual in your reporting to the community. The appeals court did NOT DISMISS THE LAWSUIT TO OVERTURN THE SALE. Once AGAIN, all it ruled on is if the plantiff had '"standing" or the "right" to bring the suit. IN FACT, NO COURT has ever even heard the case about overtuning what FPS did in a shady, maybe illegal, backroom deal. IN FACT, both courts, in their opinion stated that there may have been wrongdoing on the part of FPS... So PLEASE, for once, report what ACTUALLY happened. Oh wait, this paper is in the tank for the school district, so why do accurate reporting.

I think sue is in denial... :(

Hardly denial. I have no question as to the backroom dealing and total disregard for the proper handling of precious assets to help out "friends" that exists on the school board and to the depths these people will go...to taint everything they touch. I am just asking for accuracy in reporting. So, rahaf, read the decisions. Both of them...where ALL the judges spoke to the possible wrongdoing of the district. Why would they say that unless they, too, believe if the case was heard, fault would be found. Just wondering why the district is being "protected".
