Orchard Lake Roundabout Open House Set March 27 in Farmington Hills

Officials will share plans for the reconstruction at the 14 Mile/Orchard Lake intersection at the Farmington Hills/West Bloomfield border.

Area residents will learn more March 27 about construction project designed to draw three major roads at the Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield border into a roundabout.

The open house meeting will be held at Warner Upper Elementary School in Farmington Hills, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.  According to a Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) press release, the format allows residents to stop by at any time during the three hours to view plans and provide feedback.

The project, scheduled to begin in 2014, will involve these changes:

  • Reconstructing the 14 Mile/Orchard Lake intersection as a multi-lane roundabout
  • Reconstructing Orchard Lake from 14 Mile Road to just north of the Gateway shopping center in West Bloomfield, including the Northwestern Highway/Orchard Lake Road intersection.
  • Reconstructing and realigning the 14 Mile Road/Northwestern Highway intersection
  • Realigning 14 Mile Road between Orchard Lake and Northwestern Highway

The changes, designed to improve traffic flow and safety in and around the 14 Mile/Orchard Lake intersection, are part of the Northwestern Connector project.

The meeting is hosted by the RCOC, in partnership with the City of Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield Township.

What do you think of the roundabout? Is it a good idea or bad idea?

I don't have a problem with putting a roundabout here AS LONG AS it is large enough in size to accommodate the very high level of traffic and number of lanes. It should also allow a reasonable rate of speed through. See the new one at M-5 and Pontiac Lake Rd. The Orchard Lake / 14 Mile / Northwestern Hwy will need to be bigger and probably with even more lanes. That may require a dip into some of the parking lots in the area. Size the project for the road, not for the buildings. ALSO, please provide more education for the drivers so they know how to drive in roundabouts. Not just videos on the website. Reach out with commercials or mailers. Hey people, you still should use your blinker in a roundabout to signal when you are exiting.

I personally believe that the roundabout at the 14 mile-Northwestern-Orchard Lake will be a mess causing multiple accidents. We currently have lights that help alleviate any question on when to stop and go. I fear this round-about will be a huge mess and source of confusion for drivers.

i believe the roundabout at orchrd lake & 14 mi rd would be a marvelous idea however the public does need to be properly EDUCATED on how to use it,it only takes good smart common sense
