Planning Commission to Consider Lubavitch Campus Expansion

A plan to build a new addition of more than 16,000 square feet at the Lubavitch Campus is proposed as part of the agenda for the West Bloomfield Township Planning Commission meeting next week.

There were 11 separate activities proposed on at the site, located on the north side of Maple Road near Halsted Road, which were granted special use approval by the Township in 1992.

The college building site plan came before the township in 2007 and was approved by both the planning commission and township board. The site plan is nearly identical to the previously-approved building; however the site plan approval has expired. No changes to the plan are proposed. 

Michael Baer of Neumann/Smith Architecture in Southfield wrote that students at the Michigan Jewish Institute, a nonprofit organization, come from all over the world to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science degree at current buildings on campus.

However, the majority of students at the campus currently are high schoolers in advanced placement courses not offered by their school. A large and growing segment of enrollment is through online distance learning with virtual classrooms and web-based instruction, Baer added.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, in Town Hall, 4550 Walnut Lake Rd. in West Bloomfield.
