Romney Wins West Bloomfield Handily Over Santorum

Absentee ballots outnumbered precinct ballots as 20 percent of registered voters chose former Gov. Mitt Romney.

Former Gov. Mitt Romney won the presidential primary in West Bloomfield Tuesday handily over former Sen. Rick Santorum and a field of other Republican candidates.

Romney took 58.41 percent of the vote, followed by Santorum in second at 23.12. Romney won all but one of West Bloomfield's 27 precincts, with Santorum winning precinct two by one vote, and garnered 4,712 total votes to Santorum's 1,865.

It was later announced that Romney won the state of Michigan.

Rep. Ron Paul took third with 9.12 percent (736 votes) and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich took fourth with 6.11 percent (493 votes).

Voter turnout was comprised mostly of absentee ballots — 5,240 West Bloomfield residents voted absentee, compared with 5,011 precinct votes. Voter turnout as a whole was 20.83 percent in West Bloomfield.

President Barack Obama received 1,986 votes on the Democratic Party ballot, while 169 Democrat ballots voted uncommitted.
