Midtown to Downtown Yoga Shelter is more than just another place, it's a community helping to build Detroit

Young entrepreneurs are helping to revitalize the city, the culture, the living environment and the social and play scene in Detroit. Yoga Shelter Midtown and Yoga Shelter Downtown are proud to be a part of the revitalization.

Jesse Jackson said it perfectly, “Both tears and sweat are salty, but they render a different result. Tears will get you sympathy; sweat will get you change.” Detroit is proof that sweat and tears play a significant roll, but to elicit change, there must be a balance between connection and conviction, community and individuality. Naomi Ruth, Midtown Yoga Shelter Studio Manager and her staff, share these principles and are honored to be in the heart of Midtown, Detroit and Downtown Studio.

In celebration of the community at Yoga Shelter Midtown will be hosting two upcoming events in December.  First, Sunday, December 1st at 12:30pm 2:30pm a Self Defense Workshop. When you are down you are not out.  This self defense workshop will show participants how to use the ground to your advantage and teach practical techniques to protect yourself.

Friday, December 13th at 7pm Come Together at Yoga Shelter Midtown will celebrate the Community. Yoga Shelter instructors, Tim Clark and Naomi Ruth will lead a community workshop celebrating the friendships and love of the community coming together physically and spiritually.

The community feel of Yoga Shelter mirrors the inclusiveness, connectivity, and determination that is shining in Detroit. Like Detroit, Yoga Shelter is more than just another place, it’ a community back to an ideal that promotes not just a strong body, but a strong mind; one that activates peace and contentment.

At Yoga Shelter, there are no levels or class hierarchies. Each individual is on their own journey to explore their physical body along with their mind. What most people connect to at the Shelter is the encouragement from the teachers and staff such as Tim Clark and Naomi Ruth.

Tim Clark journey into yoga began over ten years ago. He was touring with his band and decided to take his first yoga class. “The idea was to get a little stress relief from the rigors of managing and touring,” explains Clark.  My realization became a life-long quest for inner peace and self-realization.” Through study, practice and training Clark has immersed himself in the scientific art of Yoga. Clark has taught hundreds of students, recorded yoga dvd's, personally trained clients and given motivational speeches.

Naomi Ruth having chronic back injuries came to yoga at a young age in order to avoid surgery. As the studio manager of both Midtown and Downtown, Ruth finds Yoga Shelter to be a place where individuals come together as a community, to encourage, grow, support, challenge and love the surroundings.

Yoga Shelter Midtown and Downtown offer several different kinds Yoga classes to choose from including Slow Flow, Yoga Rocks, Yin Yoga, Fusion, Prenatal, Xflowsion™ and many more.

Yoga Shelter has had national attention of late, with Founder of Yoga Shelter, Eric Paskel leading workshops and classes at this year’s Yoga Journal Conferences. “All of our events, programs and classes give students focus, a path to follow and a philosophy to live by,” says Paskel. “Every class, workshop and training is a step toward teaching us to be experts on our own lives, to become objective, clear, and powerful. The goal of yoga is to truly live each moment powerfully and fully.”

Yoga Shelter has been voted Best of Detroit. Eric Paskel opened the first Yoga Shelter studio in 2004 in West Bloomfield and have since opened studios in Birmingham, Royal Oak, Grosse Pointe and Los Angeles, serving more than 1 million students and counting. New studios are poised to open this year in several other locations.

 Both events are $25
