School Board Dives Deeper in Building and Site Fund Ballot Proposal Monday Night

The West Bloomfield Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the West Bloomfield High School Media Center.

What will the building and site sinking fund proposal look like when it goes on the May 7 ballot? Should West Bloomfield Schools accept new students as part of the Schools of Choice program? How much should the district spend reconfiguring its elementary schools?

Those questions, and more, will be answered Monday night at the West Bloomfield Board of Education meeting.

On the agenda:

Presentations

  • Building and Site Sinking Fund: Superintendent Gerald Hill, as well as Deputy Superintendent for Business and Operations, will address the board about the district's Building and Site Sinking Fund proposal, a 1.25 mill proposal that will go on district voters' May 7 ballot. The district is looking to spend $2 million annually during the next 14 years. 
  • Youth for Understanding: Peggy Simon, a volunteer, will update the board on what the Oakland County Youth for Understanding program is up to. YFU is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization that had been placing exchange students throughout Oakland County for 62 years.
  • High school academic support: Tom Shelton, principal of West Bloomfield High School, will present to the board.

Resolutions

  • Elementary schools reconfiguration work: School board members will vote on two major projects as part of the district's work to reconfigure its elementary school faciliites. Up for approval: a $20,000 project to relocate a light pole outside Doherty Elementary School; a $285,000 renovation at Doherty; a $153,000 renovation at Scotch Elementary; and a $257 renovation at Sheiko Elementary.
  • Schools of Choice: The school board will also vote on whether to accept 163 new students to the district for the 2013-14 school year as part of Michigan's Schools of Choice program. 
  • DeRoy donation: The board will vote to accept at $15,000 grant from the DeRoy Testamentary Foundation for a three-day Challenge Day program at the high school.
