Walled Lake School Board Hears Redistricting Proposals

Community turns out to hear plans dealing with closures of two local elementaries. The board is expected to decide Feb. 16 which of three plans it will implement.

Dozens of concerned parents, teachers, and administrators descended upon the Walled Lake Consolidated Schools Educational Services Center Thursday night to hear three proposals on how to redistrict in the area.

Despite the circumstances — the closure of and as announced last summer — the tenor of discussion remained peaceful and at times reverential as representatives of an appointed, 54-person redistricting committee presented ideas on transportation, building capacity, keeping neighborhoods together, a balance of diversity, and other specified parameters.

The committee had met in various capacities since October, but Thursday's meeting offered perhaps the clearest picture of where the district would be headed after the closure of the two schools at the end of this school year. Superintendent Kenneth Gutman, who thanked to those in attendance for their roles in the process, is expected to offer his own recommendation at the next board meeting Feb. 2.
